Monday’s Musings: Setting Our Sails

We cannot organize revival, but we can set our sails to catch the wind from Heaven when God chooses to blow upon His people once again. – G. Campbell Morgan

My first thought is yes, how true! I grew up in a church that had annual “revival” meetings, and I always wondered how we knew that would be the particular week that God would do something awesome. Of course, now I see that it is more about how God will respond to people who choose to set aside time and energy to focus on Him and what He wants to do in them. That is what will bring real change in our lives and our communities.

Near the end of his sermon Saturday night, our pastor mentioned something that seemed to dovetail with this quote. He said that there is a difference between expectations and expectancy. I am probably paraphrasing this badly, but the basic idea was that having expectations of God to do certain things in a particular way will lead to disappointment because we are ultimately trying to control Him, but having an attitude of expectancy means we are open to whatever and however He wants to move in our lives.

I don’t see the audio from this weekend up on the church website yet, but the sermon was actually about a different topic anyway. If you want to hear more about revival, I would recommend listening to the message from last week on his trip to Lakeland, FL (5/7/08 message).

  • good post. I have a bad habit of expecting things from God when really I just be open to however he decides to do things in my life.

  • I’m one of those who too often try to lead God, thinking He needs my help.

Thanks for giving me another reminder along my road to letting go and letting God.

  • I also appreciated the differentiation between expectation and expectancy.

  • great post – i could picture pastor d in my mind, saying that to the crowd. mmmmmm, makes me miss him a little :)

but yes, i agree with the other gals, i often get too hung up on my expectations to leave room for expectancy in my heart. good job!
