Success Sunday: A Biblical Definition of Success

Success Sunday Banner

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
–Joshua 1:8, NKJV
I have been thinking about how the Bible defines success. So I did a search for it in the King James Version on Blue Letter Bible, and this one verse was returned. (I typed the verse out of the NKJV so it is more readable, however, and should mention that the word appears more often in other versions of the Bible.)

In addition to the meaning “to prosper, have success,” their lexicon also shows the word sometimes translated as “to look at or upon, have insight,” “to give attention to, consider, ponder, be prudent,” and “to act circumspectly, act prudently, act wisely.”

So that is what I am pondering right now.

  • You know the irony of this post and its timing is that I was looking up the definitions to some words that are in my mission statement. Of course I knew what I was “meaning” when I wrote out my mission statement, but I was looking up the actual dictionary definitions and the first is Prosperity. I just defined it as Wealth and Success, but according to your post, the word is much more broader, which, for a mission statement, is great because now there are more ways for me to accomplish my goals and purpose! Thanks for your post!
