16 Comments Why Not Me?
I have heard this phrase used in response to the question, “Why me?”, when I would want to ask why we have to deal with the challenges autism brings to our lives, why our son has had to work so hard to get where he is today.
Then last week, I heard this phrase in a completely different context, at a women’s ministry class at church on the topic of Identity. So many people play down their talents and abilities instead of celebrating the gifts they have been given, but this poem by Marianne Williamson casts a new light on the topic:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is out light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented and fabulous.
Actually, who are you not to be?You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other
people won’t feel insecure around you.We were born to make manifest the glory of
God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us – it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.
So, why not me? Why not you?

Ooo dear! I wasn’t expecting that. It’s a good read but very tricky to put into practice as I’ve been practicing the alternative for 48 years. Maybe I should light a spark to my bushel although it might fizzle out like a damp squib.
Thanks for giving me something to think about today.
Best wishes

I love that poem.
It really resonates in regards to a couple of scary-but-exciting, big-idea projects I’ve found myself taking on lately.
Thank you for reminding me! Why not me, why not us, indeed?!

This is a good way to look at it, although I must admit it isn’t how I usually feel. Thanks for this post.

Fine. Let it be me. *sarcastic*
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”
This is actually a line I hear frequently through my job. It does give you a nice kick in the pants when you start to analyze anxiety and fear. Did you know that fear and excitement are physiologically the exact same emotion? The only difference is that one is associated with negativity and the other with positivity! I thought that was so interesting. I learned to change my fear into excitement just by changing the thought to negative. Like your post title…Why NOT me? That is so much more exciting to ponder don’t you think?
Thanks for the reminder. I will have to put that on my other blog since my mission statement is to “generate P.O.W.E.R.” How appropriate.

I have read a lot of Willimson’s books. She is a powerful writer. Thanks for sharing this.
I know I enjoy being around people who let their light shine and enjoy it when I do the same.

On good days, I’m completely on board with “why not me?” I can do this. No problem.
On bad days, I will admit that I swing back into “why me?”
Sometimes I even wonder, “What if she just had one less diagnosis…” It is what it is, I guess…
