What Movies Do You Recommend?

January 4, 2010 · 20 comments

in Daily Life, Fun Stuff

I need to beef up our Netflix queue, but I don’t want to end up watching a bunch of crap, so I am asking for your recommendations on what movies to request.

Please leave a comment and give me some ideas. I primarily like romantic comedies, but not too raunchy, and good drama or action without too much violence. I absolutely do not like anything with horror.

I am also open to kids and family flicks that aren’t painful for adults to sit through, i.e. not The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl!

I don’t know if that’s enough to go on, but I would love to hear what films you always recommend to people.

Hmmm. We may be polar opposites in movie watching. I would highly recommend watching the series Battlestar Galactica if you haven't. I spent the summer using Netflix to watch it and loved it. GREAT drama.

Sorry I don't have a good recommendation, but I have to laugh at your kid and parent friendly note. My 3 year old kept seeing commercials for the chipmunks sequel and said he wanted to see it. So my husband took him, it was his first movie. We didn't know how he would do, you know, sensory issues! But he loved it. My husband said it was pretty painful for him, but seeing Jaylen's reactions made it worth it. And there were lots of songs and dancing.

You and I have very different movie tastes. I hate chick flicks and just watched 7 pounds and almost couldn't make it through. But saw the 2nd Transformers, Star Trek (new one), and Terminator Salvation and found those very entertaining.

Good call, we loved Battlestar Galactica. Rented all of the seasons.

Wow, that's a lot of discs! I actually love Star Trek and think the new movie is fantastic. We haven't had cable in so long that I missed out on Battlestar Galactica – I'll have to check it out. :)

Yes, I send my hubby to most of the kid flicks, although I take a turn occasionally! Star Trek I love, but the others not so much.

Thanks for the great list – I see several I already love! We saw Cloudy as a family and loved it. It has been a favorite book of ours, and I think they did a great job using that as a jumping off point for a film. I'll have to check out Mercury Rising as well.

Ooh, that's a good one! I loved the book and forgot they made a movie out of it. Sappy, but how can you resist such a story??

Bob and Michael loved UP. I'll have to try out Phineas and Ferb; we don't get cable so it's cool that they are putting out the DVDs. Thanks!

Confessions is one of my favorite books; I'll have to check out the movie. The word “Finnish” still makes me laugh! I did like Julie and Julia and wouldn't mind seeing it again – good suggestion. Thanks!

Well, i was going to suggest Julie and Julia but I see you've already watched it.

A movie that I was surprised to laugh like crazy during was The Hangover. It was terribly funny.

I'm so bad at remembering what movies I've seen. I watched a few on Video on Demand over the holidays… two were those I just mentioned and I can't remember what else… hmmm… oh yes, I saw “Management” with Jennifer Aniston. It was okay… nothing wonderful though.

I liked The Holiday. Okay, that was a year ago, but usually when I watch a movie I'm disappointed, so I think it was good. =)

I like watching TV series on DVD these days. It's like a never-ending movie with no commercials- I love it. My favorites were Jericho, Lost and McLeod's Daughters…

Wow, that's quite a list! Loved Amazing Grace and Hitch, still have nightmares about the bedbugs in one of the Ocean's movies but liked the first one.

I added a bunch of these to my queue – thanks!

My sister-in-law just recommended The Hangover – I'm glad to have a second vote for that one. I just can't get past watching Jennifer Aniston on TV for so long to really get into movies with her (sorry, Jennifer!).

Thanks for the comment!

Would you believe I just got that in my Christmas stocking? I really liked it. I'll have to see what Netflix lists as similar. Thanks!
