The Judgment (Rose Trilogy, #2)The Judgment (Rose Trilogy #2)
by Beverly Lewis

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

About the Book

Rose Kauffman is engaged to Silas Good, a well-liked Amish fellow, so why does she still pine for Nick Franco, the former foster son of the bishop? Especially now that Nick has left the Amish community under a cloud of suspicion after the death of the bishop’s biological son? Will Rose marry Silas, even while struggling with romantic feelings for Nick?

Meanwhile, Rose’s older sister, Hen, has returned to live at her parents’ farm with her young daughter. Hen and her modern husband, Brandon, are separated by mutual agreement, although he is threatening to sue for custody of their daughter if Hen does not return soon. Will the judge rule in Brandon’s favor? Is there any way Hen can reestablish her place among the People without sacrificing her marriage?

My Thoughts

I am giving this one 3 stars because it is Beverly Lewis, although I have to admit I am not as much of fan of the ever-predictable Amish trilogies as I used to be. However, certain authors in this niche are always readable, and Lewis is at the top of that list.

I did find the story of the sister who married an outsider but then wishes to return with her young daughter to be intriguing. Having a child in the mix adds another dimension to the situation of being pulled between two worlds. I also found it extremely interesting that her community wishes for her to return to her husband, even if it means leaving the Amish community, because of the fact that she has entered a marriage covenant which she shouldn’t break.

The main character, Rose, isn’t as interesting, but hopefully she will gain a bit of a backbone in the third book and we will see the charming Nick reappear once again.

Note: This is Book #95 of my 2011 Reads (master list here).
