A Marriage Carol is a short novel that begins on Christmas Eve and ends on Christmas Day, in one of many nods to the original Dickens’ tale.

Jacob and Marlee Ebenezer are driving to an attorney’s office to finalize their divorce, twenty years to the day from when they got married. A terrible snowstorm intervenes, causing them to have an accident that stops them from getting to his office.

I don’t want to give away the rest of the story, so I’ll stop my description of the book there, but suffice it to say that I was entranced by the events that followed and found this to be a very touching book. I especially appreciated some of Dr. Chapman’s words in the Afterword:

My hope is that this story will reinforce the message that there is great power in small choices. There is great hope in a heart turned toward another person. And ultimately, the greatest hope comes from a love outside of us, the love of God who wants to reconcile us to himself.

So true, and such a great message for all of us, especially at this time of year when we celebrate Christ’s birth.

This is #118 of my 2011 Reads (master list here). Thank you to Moody Publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.
