Entwined, the debut novel from Heather Dixon, puts a sinister twist on the tale of The Twelve Dancing Princesses.
In this story, the princesses’ mother has just passed away and the girls are not allowed to dance or do much else, as they are in full mourning for a year. They discover a magic passageway within the castle, however, and sneak out each night to dance away the hours with a mysterious man who calls himself simply Keeper. As time goes on, they learn more about the legends surrounding their kingdom’s past and discover that Keeper may not be as wonderful as he seems at first.
While I did enjoy reading the story as an adult, I think that I would have loved it as a young teen. It is recommended for ages 13 and up, and I would agree with that suggestion.
This is #117 of my 2011 Reads (master list here).
