Bailee Cooper has lived with secrets her entire life, and now it seems the truth is about to come out. Her memories of her mother’s eccentricities and the questions surrounding her death when Bailee was still a young girl, and her sisters even younger, have left her feeling like, as she puts it, “the headmistress in our strange house of secrets.”

But her father has asked that they all come together at the family summer home, where their lives changed so drastically fifteen years earlier. This meeting occurs just as Bailee is facing major decisions in the areas of both work and love, and also becomes the catalyst for a shaking of what she believes about God. When the truth ends up being more difficult to comprehend than she ever thought possible, Bailee finally opens up to her coworker and friend Mark Delahunt. His strong faith and supportive friendship offer her a safe place to explore her struggle understanding her past and God’s place in her life.

House of Secrets is a wonderfully written novel that offers an understanding perspective on the issues that mental illness can create in a family. It also illustrates how knowing the truth can ultimately set you free from the pain of the past and allow you to finally move forward towards the future, in a way that nothing else can. I would highly recommend this book to all fiction lovers.

This is #119 of my 2011 Reads (master list here). Thank you to Bethany House for providing a free review copy of this book.
