While Vicious Cycle by Terri Blackstock is the second book in a series, it can definitely stand on its own. Blackstock includes enough information about the previous events to give the reader a sense of what has transpired without spending too much time recounting the earlier story.
The first book in the series, Intervention, centers on Barbara and her daughter Emily, who has become addicted to drugs and is then embroiled in a mysterious death on her way to a treatment facility. In this installment, we again see one of Barbara’s kids in trouble, but this time it is her son Lance. Although a good kid at heart, Lance makes some immature decisions that put him on the wrong side of a criminal investigation.
It’s a suspenseful ride as we watch Lance, Barbara, and her suitor Kent try to help a young girl addicted to meth do the right thing for both herself and her baby, despite the pressure from her own family to continue on the path to destruction. Emily is also a large part of the action as she integrates back into the real world after graduating from the drug treatment center.
I always enjoy this author, and Vicious Cycle was no exception. I would recommend it to any fan of Christian fiction who also likes a dose of suspense with their redemption and romance.
Note: This is Book #112 of my 2011 Reads (master list here).
