Friday’s Fave Five

I’ve just run across this meme at Callapidder Days and thought I would join in and see how it goes. It is hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story.

Basically, it’s a place to post about 5 favorite things from your week. As Susanne puts it, “It can be anything that tickled your fancy over the week. Favorite quotes, posts, happenings, scriptures, recipes, pictures, great internet finds, etc.”

Here’s my list:

1. This marvelous video of a middle school valedictorian giving a tribute to her brother, who has Down Syndrome. Here’s the link in case the video doesn’t show up in my post.

2. The announcement of a new CommentLuv plugin that’s coming very soon. Andy has definitely piqued my interest with his ramp-up campaign of a new video every couple of days – I can’t wait for the new plugin to be released so I can try it out.

3. Another great video, this one about Sensory Processing Disorder. The black and white stick figure drawings are fun, and my son laughed so hard at parts that he wanted to watch the video again! Here’s the video on YouTube.

4. The fact that my dental implant is in and isn’t causing me too much pain, just a bit of residual soreness. In a few months, I will be able to get it crowned and smile big again.

5. The support I have received this week since renaming/moving my blog. I have appreciated each and every comment and am surprised and thankful to see my Feedburner count going up a bit. :)

What are your favorite things this week?

Blog Gems: Redeeming Elvis (A Vacation Story)

The prompt for this edition of Blog Gems is to “link up a post that tells us about a holiday, any kind of holiday even just a weekend away (or an hour to yourself!).” All you have to do is link up your post and then read and comment on the two posts listed before yours (at least!). Visit Blog Gems – Air Your Archives #8 to link up your post or read some other entries.

As I was reflecting back over what I have written about this topic, I realized that I have just passed the three-year mark of my start in blogging, as my first post was published on January 26, 2008. It has been quite the adventure, and I still love it!

The holiday story that comes to my mind, however, is not one that I wrote about here. Instead, it was one of my very first posts on the site 5 Minutes for Special Needs, written just after it started in July of 2008.

I am reprinting the post here to make it easier. I know this is a pretty broad interpretation of the prompt, but since this is what popped into my head, here it is!

Redeeming Elvis (A Vacation Story)

What a whirlwind the last couple of weeks have been – working on articles and various details for the launch of 5 Minutes for Special Needs between posting on my own blog, going to work, taking care of my husband and son, handling ongoing transportation problems and getting ready for a family vacation that started the day before the site went live! Despite the continual itch to sneak away and visit the wifi hotspot during our vacation, we had a wonderful time with each other and my husband’s family.

One of the highlights of the trip was going to a horse riding place where the younger kids had pony rides while the older kids and some of the adults went for a trail ride. As the guide, Matt, helped my son onto his horse, I mentioned that he has autism and may not always answer when spoken to. Matt’s response was to ask me to join them, so of course my first thought was that he was worried about how my son would behave and didn’t want to be alone with him in case there was a problem. But it turned out that he actually wanted to talk to me.

As we walked along the path, he told me about about a child who has come into his life who has Asperger Syndrome. At the stable they have a horse, named Elvis, who was rescued from an abusive situation, and he wasn’t sure if they would ever be able to use him with guests. This boy has really taken to Elvis, however, and the horse has responded by being very gentle around him. From this experience, Matt has looked into the use of horses as therapy with children and adults who have various disabilities and is now planning to become certified for therapeutic horseback riding.

I never know what the response will be when I tell someone that my son has autism, although I am amazed at the number of times the person will begin sharing their concerns about a niece or nephew, a grandchild, or even their own son or daughter. This encounter, however, was such an encouragement to me. Although we hear stories every day of kids who are ostracized or damaged in some way by the people in their lives, here is a guy who had an experience and has responded by looking for a way that he can make a difference in the lives of others. All I can say is, “Way to go, Matt!”

So what’s the best reaction you have gotten to your child’s disability? Please leave a comment and share it with us.

Autism/Asperger’s Blog Hop

This Autism/Asperger’s Blog Hop was just started by Sueberry Lane, and I learned of it from Autism Learning Felt.

I haven’t used this type of link-up tool before, but when you add your blog, it will show up everywhere this particular one is posted. Pretty cool, huh?!?

Anyway, this is the original description, so please feel free to join in if it applies to you:

Please list your Autism / Asperger’s Syndrome Blog here.

Autism Advocate sites and stores are welcome also.

Even if your blog is not an “Autism Blog” but you have children on the spectrum I’d love to have you join the blog hop. This is a great way to connect with others that can relate to your story and lend a kind ear.

Have fun visiting the linked blogs and hopefully finding some new resources…and friends!

Super Mommy’s First Blog Hop

BWS tips button

I have been meeting a bunch of new bloggers lately, and one of them is a fun lady named Super Mommy. In addition to posting reviews and freebies, she has also started sharing about her two kids, one of whom has autism.

For the blog hop, she is asking us to tell what our blogs are about, how we got started, and how long we have been blogging. So here goes…

I published my first blog post on January 26, 2008, so as of right now, I have been blogging for a little over 16 months, and it has been an exciting adventure. I started out just wanting a place to express my thoughts and “find myself”, and then I discovered this amazing community of mommy bloggers and parents of special needs children who want to connect with and support each other.

Tomorrow I will have been married to my husband Bob for 17 years, and we have one son, Michael, who is 7 years old and getting ready to start first grade in a regular classroom with behavioral support. We live in South Central Pennsylvania and attend a wonderful non-denominational charismatic church where I am involved in the special needs ministry.

I work part-time in the promotional products industry (anybody need any mugs or pens with their logo printed on them??) and spend the rest of my time juggling housework, errands, and sleep with being Michael’s case manager and advocate.
