Success Sunday: What Stops You?

Success Sunday Banner

“Other people and things can stop you temporarily. You’re the only one who can do it permanently.”
–Zig Ziglar

Most of the times when I am angry or frustrated, I find that it is because I have let this happen. When I take back control of how I am reacting and responding to the situation, those feelings of being trapped and helpless recede, even if the difficulties are still there.

Is there anything or anyone that you are letting stop you from moving forward right now?

Success Sunday: Work Happy

Success Sunday Banner

“In order that people may be happy in their work, these three things are needed: They must be fit for it. They must not do too much of it. And they must have a sense of success in it.”
–John Ruskin

How true this is! And I think you can apply it to almost any area of life.

Success Sunday: Guard Kindness

Success Sunday Banner

“Guard well within yourself that treasure, kindness. Know how to give without hesitation, how to lose without regret, how to acquire without meanness.”
–George Sand

Being kind isn’t always my first instinct, but it is the best instinct. For me, it encompasses so much – not making judgments about other people, not being impatient or selfish, and thinking of what the other person needs. And how good do I feel when someone treats me that way?

Success Sunday: We Need Not Wait

Success Sunday Banner

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”
–Anne Frank

What can you do today to make a difference in someone else’s life? I have to confess I can easily become very focused on myself and my own problems, so this is a good reminder for me to turn my gaze outward and look around me for what I can do to be part of the solution.

Success Sunday: As You Know Yourself

Success Sunday Banner

“Only as you do know yourself can your brain serve you as a sharp and efficient tool. Know your own failings, passions, and prejudices so you can separate them from what you see.”
–Bernard M. Baruch

How true!  I am definitely dealing with this issue while trying to advocate for my son in kindergarten.  All of my insecurities and worries make it difficult to be an effective communicator and to clearly analyze each situation instead of reacting purely on an emotional level.

On the other hand, I find that owning my “failings, passions, and prejudices” can actually become a source of strength, because then I can process them and move past them to be a part of the solution.

Success Sunday: Sincere Love

Success Sunday Banner

“Sincere love is something that sacrifices—not something that indulges itself. Sincere love is responsible. It would never knowingly hurt, but would heal.”
–Richard L. Evans

The topic of relationship has been on my mind a lot lately, for a variety of reasons, and it seems this is one of the hardest areas to maintain “success.”  Even when you think you have a relationship that will stand the test of time–it can fall apart on you when you least expect it.

This quote is a reminder to me to keep my own focus on being sincere and offering love and healing no matter what my own hurts have been.  It also helps me to see that someone who is purposely hurting me is not showing love and not being responsible.  As the saying goes, “Hurt people hurt people,” and I think that is so true.

I know this is vague (mainly because I am not comfortable sharing details about other people), but I think it has many applications.  In the meantime, I will keep trying to show love and pray for healing.

Success Sunday: Spreading Light

Success Sunday Banner

“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”
–Edith Wharton
I was thinking about this quote in terms of blogging, of how we share our lives and our insights to hopefully encourage others in their own journeys. And of how we can also point each other to new friends who are also sharing their struggles and triumphs along the way.

Over the last couple weeks, I have been introduced to a number of new (to me) blogs and wanted to share some of them with you. These are just a few of them; I hope you will be encouraged as I have to see the strength and love each of these mamas has for their children.

Success Sunday: If At First You Don’t Succeed

Success Sunday Banner

“If at first you don’t succeed, find out if the loser gets anything.”
–Bill Lyon
Just thought I would share a funny quote this week.  I spent the afternoon at a friend’s house today; we were making cards and this saying was on one of the stamps.  One of the other stamps said, “What if the hokey pokey really is what it’s all about?”

So today is sort of a non-success Sunday around here.  Just keeping it all in perspective.

Success Sunday: Writing to Change the World

Success Sunday Banner

“You write in order to change the world, knowing perfectly well that you probably can’t, but also knowing that literature is indispensable to the world. . . . The world changes according to the way people see it, and if you alter, even by a millimeter, the way . . . people look at reality, then you can change it.”
–James Baldwin
This quote is used by Mary Pipher to preface her book Writing to Change the World: An inspiring guide for transforming the world with words. In the introduction, she talks about a writer’s job being to “tell stories that connect readers to all the people on the earth” and says that as “cultural brokers for the world of ideas” we are to “share, as best we can, what we know.”

Although I am only a few chapters into the book, I can see that it has not only inspired me to keep writing, but also to continue examining who I am and what I believe. I’m curious, what are your motivations for writing and what has inspired you?
